Castiglione del Lago
Castiglione del Lago is a fortress town which sits on the edge of Lago Trasimeno in Umbria. At one point in its history it was an island on the lake. It has a fabulous fortress (Rocca) designed to give its owners strategic control over the lake and it has withstood a number of sieges. Leonardo da Vinci came up from Rome to study the fortifications because it was considered such a strong example of a fortress. It is very popular with tourists and the main street is lined with delicatessens where local produce can be purchased to take home as souvenirs.
